I will have to bookmark this article to show to my cat loving sister. I think the shelves are a very stylish and non cluttering way to give kitty some entainment. I fear nothing will stop my cat from trying to drive me nuts. She is the type that jumps on the bed when I try to make it, or suddenly needs attention, which involves a lot of meowing, smooching and running under my feet, when I am busy doing something.

I still have a lotus cat tree which my cat used to do his birdwatching from. There is a taller version too - I liked it because it is not overpadded with the always wrong color carpet.

Will be downsizing into a new condo and am really needing a liter box that is disguised as a stylist pce. of furniture. The one shown, unfortunately is not the right style for my interior. Does anyone know of a store that sells a pce. that is modern in design?

I'm not sure I like wall shelving for cats, they can't differentiate between what they are allowed to climb on and what they aren't. A cat will do what ever it wants but I don't think I like the idea of encouraging them.

My cat has had no interest in the cat beds I’ve bought him until I put one away on a shelf in my closet. He came across it and now it is his very favorite place to sleep.

Here's an idea for artwork of your cat: I discovered an app last week called Waterlogue that turns your photos into water colors. My first test was with a picture of my cat.

I'm quite annoyed with our 2 cats. They completely ignore every toy or habitat we bought for them. I barely manage to get 2 minutes of interest out of them when I get something new; they then turn their back and jump and curl up on the sofa. Or the desk. or bed. or even the sink! or whatever there is in the house that hasn't been purposely designed for cats. How did I end up with such ungrateful monsters?

I could benefit from a canopy bed. The canopy looks like it would contain my fat cat a little better than the dog beds I've been getting him. He tends to spill out of beds specifically designed for cats because they're waaaay too small. If I'm being honest, he spills off the couch, too...

Ok I think cats would love any of these but I have a concern in picture one. If you have a cat then you would have to agree that anyone sitting on that couch could be in for head trauma when the glass candle holders fall out of the cat trail box and on to their head. For your own safety and those of others please put soft items in these displays.

Love the article and pics, and the comments too! Most cats prefer to choose their toys, and usually choose what we haven't chosen for them. I just bought a new cat bed a month ago and still not used. I even put a bit of catnip in it. In time, I'm sure he will use it like the other ones - one in each room. He also has 3 cat trees located at his favourite windows, which he uses. His favourite toys are pompoms that have some crinkle in them. He bats them and carries them from one room to another. Here he is in his cubby on the bed (would not go in it on the floor - too hard :D)

Also be sure to add "Kitty TV" (a birdfeeder) outside your window for hours of entertainment. My cat discovered - and notified us with his bird like chirps and excited activity - that in spring we have a pair of nesting herons that roost in our neighbor's tree and fly into our yard for nesting materials. Here is a watercolor we commissioned honoring the occasion.

Test the enclosed litterbox idea first before you shell out big bucks for the furniture type. Some cats wont use them. they contain the dust and litter and we like it, but cats have much more sensitive noses than we do. If you can smell the perfume or chemicals in the litter then it being enclosed makes it overwhelming to the cat and many wont go near them. You can make one with a cardboard box or buy a cheap plastic one from pet smart and try it. You also have to clean them 2-3 times a day.
Its a cats nature, the box is more fun than the expensive bed! Just put out a couple of your favorite sweaters, tell them to stay off and that's where they want to be!

Luciana...you're in good company. We have three felines, all with very different personalities. Our 'big guy' also loves to curl up in the bathroom sink; it's the perfect size and a nice change of pace, especially when the weather is 'warm. This guy also loves to 'play' with rolled up socks; carries them around like prey while growling!

I'd have to say that MOST of the 'cat' toys we've ever had were of little/no interest to the cats. Successes include daBird (feathers on end of long rod) which all three young cats LOVE and our two older cats (now passed on) both loved, too. Any type of laser pointer is a big hit with cats as well. We had one young cat (taken by coyote, unfortunately) who did like stuffed mice and jingle balls, but none of our other cats couldn't have cared less for them. What they do like is a variety of every day items alternated....things like small paper balls, tie-ties, tp rolls, etc that they can easily bat around.

We have a small condo, large condo, and 3-tier perch and all three get used daily. However, I believe they are popular because of their window locations. Neither of the condos were used when we lived in other houses in which we couldn't locate the cat furniture by window. Make no mistake, though, our kitties still make themselves at home on the people furniture too. They are completely happy since there are plenty of spots for them around the house....they have 'options' which cats DO like!

@SherryWebber try Modernist Cat on Etsy http://www.etsy.com/shop/modernistcat They have some really great pieces. I've also seen some really fabulous litter box designs made out of Ikea pieces. I took an old non-working 60s stereo HiFi cabinet, gutted it, cut an entry hole in it and made an awesome hidden cat litter box enclosure. My cats adore climbing into their "personal space" to do their thing. The original metal screen doors are convenient too, the cats can look out and see what's going on around them. And they make for easy access when cleaning up.

Rita, your girl looks a LOT like our 15lb big guy. We have triple shuttered windows with a nice wide ledge that make a great window seat for him. He squalks in the morning if I forget to leave a shutter open for him to peruse his universe. That's his morning routine (younger cats join him sometimes) and he sticks to it!

I changed my Ikea sideboard into an easy to clean place to hide my abessinians litter box. I already had the white sideboard, it looks like an old cupboard from the schoolcorridor, but not standing upright. You know, the cheap one with keys on.
I let the doors stay the same and took out all the shelves and one side of the bottom inside.
Now the three cats just trips in under the sideboard on the side where there is neither shelves or bottom and steps up in the cupboard to the side where the last shelve ( the "bottompiece" ) where the litterbox is placed.
I have a big box, the one which has a plastic top with walls, roof and a door. It fits.
When I clean it, I just open the door and take it out.
You can choose to have one top shelve left on opposite side and storage the things you need for daily cleaning of the box. I beg of you to excuse my lack of proper english words, I am from IKEA-country; Sweden. Best of luck from one blue Abby and two Wild (brown) ones. And me, Kajsa!

As to the wool inserts / pads - some cats, especially of Siamese extraction, may eat wool. The "eating weird things" condition is called a pica. This tendency can lead to obstructions in their guts - very expensive to remove (I speak from experience). Use old towels for lining beds or boxes - they can be washed!

Yes Kajsa, your English is good and most definitely better than my Swedish (which is none!). Visited your country briefly on a cruise ship stop....would love to visit again and stay longer. Oddly enough after living in Europe I still have only 1 small table and chairs from IKEA. Now back in the US the closest store is an hour away so I rarely go there. However, I am also intrigued by your IKEA litter box idea and would love to see a photo or two. That might fuel a trip to the Denver store!

BTW, best of luck to both the Swedes and the Canadians.....the best we can hope for is bronze if we win against the Finns. Great rivalries!

I had a rescued Ragdoll, who recently died. He was such a good companion, but didn't care much for "toys". I found he liked the plastic grocery sacks bunched up inside another grocery sack, than tied the handles. It was lightweight & made a sound could be knocked against anything & I guess it gave Cooper a sense of power. For rescue foster moms it sure a cheap new toy, for cats & kittens.

Love all the comments and ideas. Have a question for juanitac, your orange & white cat, Red Mainecoon. We have a brother and sister rescues since they were 3 months old. No matter how much we groom them they have mattes in their fur, that are impossible to get out. We try to cut them out but they won't let us do too much. Have you had this problem and what do you do to get rid of them?

Violet, both Roxie grey and Simba orange are mainecoon rescue cats. They shed something fierce. We purchased a "furminator" a few years ago at pet smart, it has a razor in it and helps eliminate the thick hair. We also use the flea comb not for fleas but to help manage their "fur" every so often we bath them. We have not had any matting issues. Good luck!
